The Population Explosion

How fast is India Growing

The population clock in the Union Health Ministry, Nirman Bhavan, New Delhi, now ticks at the rate of 31 persons per minute. The clock shows that about 44,640 babies are born in India everyday. Hence the population of India increases by 16.29 million every year, which is equivalent to the total population of Australia. Here are some more facts about our motherland.
The present population of India is around 1.4 Billion (1400 Million). The billionth baby is a girl. Her name is ASTHA (which means Faith). Her mother's name is Anjana Arora, and her father's name is Ashok Kumar Arora. She was born in Delhi at Saftharjung Hospital at 5.50 a.m. on Thursday, May 11, 2000.

India with about 2.4% of the land area in the world contains about 16% of the population of the world.

The density of the population in India has climbed up from 261 per square kilometer in 1981 to 267 per square kilometer in 1991. This is ten times greater than the density in the United States (26 per square kilometer) and 2.5 times greater than the density in China (109 per square kilometer).

The birth rate in India (31 per thousand people) is greater than that of China (20 per thousand people). If this trend continues, India will beat up China by 2025 A.D., making India the most populous nation in the world. In 2025 A.D, India will have 1591 million people and China 1554 million people.

Only five countries in the world - China, USA, Brazil, Indonesia, and United USSR have more population than Uttar Pradesh (145 million), which is one of the 28 states in India.

The total population of the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu was 55.6 million as of 1991. About 4,478,000 people die every year in Tamil Nadu, or to put it another way, 1,227 people pass every day into eternity without knowing Christ.

Every year the total Population of Australia is added to the population of India.

One out of every seven people in the world lives in India. So if India, which is open for the gospel, is reached, then every seventh person in the world will be reached.

More people live in India than all the people living in North America, South America, and Australia put together.

The death rate in India is 8.39 million per year. This means that 23,000 people everyday, 958 people every hour, or 16 people every minute, pass into a Christless eternity. Are we "moved with compassion for them because they are weary and scattered" like Jesus Christ said in Matthew 9:26

The Challenge of Languages

In India there are about 1,942 language groups without God's written Word. There are also 1,658 different mother tongues and 16 major languages - classified as official languages, spoken by about 90% of the India population. Here is some information to challenge the Bible translation workers:

The New Testament was printed first only in Tamil Nadu and released on March 30, 1711. This was the first book to be printed in Tamil.

There are about 370 major languages spoken by more than 5,000 speakers in India, out of which the translation work must be started in about 210 languages immediately.

In India 160 languages have the written Word: the whole Bible exists in 89 languages, the New Testament in 31 languages, and the Gospel portions in 90 languages.

It has been reported that India stands first in the effort to translate the Scriptures. At present translation work is in progress in more than 82 new languages in India, followed by 81 new translation works in Indonesia.

India urgently needs young men and women who will give their talent and life to translating the Scriptures into 210 languages.

The Religious Groups: (Census 2001 religious information highlights)

At the national level, of 1028 million population, 828 million (80.5 per cent) have returned their religion as Hindus. 128 million (13.4 per cent) as Muslims. 24 million (2.3 per cent) as Christians. 19 million (1.9 percent) follow Sikh religion. 8 million (0.8 per cent) are Buddhists. 4.2 million (0.4 per cent) are Jains. 6.6 million belong to other religions and persuasions including tribal religions. About 0.7 million have not stated their religion.

Christianity has the highest sex ratio with 1009 females per 1000 while Sikh has the lowest with 893. Buddhist has 953; Jains 940; Muslim 936 and Hindus 931. The national average is 933. In the children between 0-6 years of age Sikhs have 786; Jains 870; Hindus 925; Buddhists 942; Muslims 950 and Christians 964. The national average is 927.

The Religious Groups

In India the religious groups can be broken down as follows:

Hindus 675,000,000
Muslims 110,000,000
Christians 38,000,000
Sikhs 17,000,000
Buddhists 6,000,000
Jains 4,000,000

It has been reported that less than 2% of the evangelical effort is directed towards reaching these needy souls. India has the largest number of Sikhs and the second largest number of Muslims in the world, next to Indonesia. In 1971 the Muslim population was 9.9%, which increased to 11.35 in 1981. This increase is about 30.5%, and now it is claimed that India is more than 14% Muslim.
How can we ever reach the more than 70% of India who are illiterate? We can reach them with video, audio cassettes, Christian films, and personal evangelism through native missionaries. Doesn't your heart break when you read and learn all these facts, realizing that the work is still undone? If the Lord burdens you, please write to us. The Lord raised up Comfort of Jesus Church to fulfill the Great Commission during these last days through literature and missionaries. You are welcome to become a prayer partner and support the ministry as the Lord leads you.

Are you willing to stand in the gap?

As you read through this brief note, if God places a vision in your heart for the India, please pray for us and let us know what you would do for Christ!

If you have any encouragement word for India or If God spoke anything about India.. Please write to me.E-mail:reconciliationprem@rediffmail.com
