I think one of the mistakes we make is we say "orality is the opposite of literate". This is comparing apples and oranges orality is at it's root a "learning style" and literacy addresses an "acquired skill". It is more helpful to me when I limit t…

In addition to Bible Stories, I believe the true stories of folks who have found hope in their struggles to overcome addictions can be a powerful tool. Recently, I shared the story of Josephine Genialle a Native American women who had all five of he…

The first time I did it, I had not yet attended an STS workshop, but had read some of the materials online. I usually tell the creation story of Genesis 1:1 through 2:3 as one story, The creation of Adam and Eve in Genesis 2:4-25 as one story, and G…

Thanks for the question. Yes, I definitely think that the issue is more complex, than not being functionally literate equating oral learner status. The topic of orality is broad and complex and oral learners can be functionally literate. Some of thi…

I believe you need to look beyond literacy levels to how people receive and share information. Tex Sample has coined the term "Traditional Oral" people in his book "Ministry in an Oral Culture: LIving with Will Rogers, Uncle Remus and Minnie Pearl."…

Literacy levels and orality... are they the same thing?

I've been doing some research about the Baton Rouge area (where I grew up) and the statistics show that 28% of the Baton Rouge population functions at the lowest level of literacy. (National Assessme…

Are there MP3s available of the previous ION Conferences?

I did a google search, but didn't find anything. Well, I got a lot of links to places where I can order the audio version of Making Disciples of Oral Learners. God bless, Steve

Just wanted to get that question out there.... I've had a lot of success with both Lazarus stories... the story of Lazarus and the rich man.... and also the story of Jesus' resurrection of his frien…

The garbage chasers

Here in Juiz de Fora, there are tens of thousands of people whose daily life involves pushing a cart through the street and searching through the garbage for things that can be sold to a recycling station. This includes plastic, metal, cardboard. etc. Many of these people live on th… Continue

Thank you, I will listen to it in ENGLISH. I so appreciate any suggestions that you can give. It matters to me. I want to be able to share God's Word that others may know and believe.

Yes, I have . I was just saying one before coffee this a.m. I love finding the stories that I know and have taught and saying them word by word from the scripture. I just love it. I always, always ask for God's help even before I start a story and He makes it come alive. I am learning now the Story of the Blind Man in John 9, Everytime I say it, I can't wait to share it. I am mentoring 2 girls who have been called to missions and they are loving the stories. One girl is not an oral learner (like me). I told her the story about Salt and Light. She looked at me and said, I can't do this. Such a lie from the evil one. So we prayed. I told her to look at it and if necessary write it down. What we heard from her in less than 3 minutes, may us want to cry. She told the story without missing a word and with so much enthusiam. They are both doing wonderful and they are teaching me as we learn together. Someday I want to Skype a team member and face to face get some insight so I can do this right from the beginning. I am studying Pulaar and teach twice a week so I really have to triage my time. I love it. Thank you so much for encourging me.

Thank you, thank you. You have helped me so very much. I am so hungry to learn how to tell stories that God will use to bring others to Himself. What a joy it is to walk with people who understand that hunger. I have not known where to go or how to find the help that you have just given me. I am running to learn all that is in this material. Soli Deo Gloria

Stephen,

When you left your earlier comment on my blog, I wasn't aware that you get Stories from Storytellers every week! Glad to know you enjoy them. Thanks for the kind words. Blessings on your storytelling there in Brazil.

Yes. It's free. It lets you upload MP3 or Wav. You see the "sound waves" visually and you can "see" the part that needs to be edited out by highlighting it and hitting delete. It's so easy I can use it!

Do you use Audacity software to edit your audio? I use it to edit my sermons for uploading. It's great ... from sourceforge.net. It helps me edit out the ums, sneezes, wheezes and other things for a tighter audio. I use it on my laptop.
