We are working with 12 or more different languages when we teach the stories. The question has come up'
"do we have to memorize the story word for word"? In general I am saying, no you don't have to memorize it word for word if you can be consistent and accurate each time you teach it to a group. Actually we don't want to use the term memorize but rather internalize which means not only

Bet you didn't know that the guy in the very last row was blogging these sessions live, did you? Another proof of concept for future IONs that can be seen at http://www.audiobiblesforparaguay.org/liveblog/
Once again this is not an official site, but others might find it interesting.

Although not official sites of ION. I set up a drop site where folks could put their notes and files. It turned out to be more of a proof of concept idea as I was the only one who participated in this social venture.
There are some files and links there that were made available for free at the conference. So stop by and get something or leave something.

A central cord of Bible stories is that they provide us with human examples. People have a natural tendency to imitate that to which they are consistently exposed. This is such a strong part of human learning that it even happens unintentionally. For example, in our speech patterns we may find that we picked up a figure of speech from a person we were around or that our accent changed because we were living in a different region. In fact, much of what we are—in our mannerisms, our way of speakin…

Question... Is Anybody Using "Bible Storying" with "Recovery" Type Ministries?
I'm talking about Celebrate Recovery or another outreach to people with addictions?
I'd like to know.
Thanks.

Come and get involved in the discussion. This is a "no holds barred", "everything goes", "think out of the box" discussion group for those that are frustrated with the
easy answers to the orality question that just don't seem to be working in their ministry context.
Let's work it out together.

I would invite you all to join this group if the description looks interesting,

As the focus on ministering to oral learners increases, there is a need to take the discussion beyond just storying. Here we will explore any form of pedagogy that may be useful in reaching secondary oral learners. Special attention is given to the examination of the cognitive learning styles of "Field Dependent" learners.
The most valuable thing on this site are foun…

Over the years my wife and I have traveled widely in ministry, and we've often found ourselves in lovely places on our wedding anniversary or other special days. Not long after we were married I discovered that she has the custom of picking a flower and pressing it between the pages of a book as reminders of these gifts from God. Of course the flowers soon lose their beautiful color and pleasing aroma but in her mind each flower is a permanent link to those special times. Bible stories are like…

The striking similarities between many aspects of biblical cultures and that of present-day oral cultures provide important avenues for communication of the gospel. People from tribal and peasant contexts often understand instinctively that which must be explained to a Christian from a literate culture. Familiarity with idolatry, the spirit world, blood sacrifice, cleansing rituals, village life, poverty, illness, death, agriculture, social hierarchy, power differential, kinship obligations, sac…

Ten Church Planter Essential Qualifications
By Pastor Scott Thomas, Acts 29 Director
This is a longer blog than normal, but these are the notes from my talk at Exponential 2009 in an effort to serve those who attended and wanted to engage dialogically in the conversation live.
Introduction
Every young man that considers church planting asks the question, Am I a Church Planter? It is the question I asked myself many years ago. It is the question we ask every man who submit…

The biblical storytelling community differs about the degree of latitude that is permissible in scripting stories for oral presentation. Some hold to a strict, almost word-for-word transmission based on written or recorded texts, while others employ an approach that emulates the traditional form of telling a story, weaving the words around the story elements. I find myself firmly in the latter camp and want to explain why.
Tom Steffen defines narrative as a picture in the mind of one person tra…

Greetings!
Today the ION Prayer Core Team met with the Mission's Prayer Coordinator at Grace Church in Eden Prairie, MN. That is the location for the 2009 ION Annual Conference.
Ms. Jean is 87 years young, sharp as a tack and a wealth of information. She leads up the prayer teams at Grace Church that cover the 5 continents of mission ministry that her church is involved with. Wow, until our call, she said that she was aware of oral work, but had not heard the term "orality"! Yes, there were in…
